बरनउँ रघुबर बिमल जसु, जो दायकु फल चारि॥

A little about the Hanuman Chalisa
Tulsidas ji wrote the Hanuman Chalisa in Awadhi, and its forty verses walk through the whole glory of Hanuman ji, his strength, his wisdom, his devotion to Ram ji, and the way he stands as a shield for anyone who remembers him. That is why the line sankat katai mitai sab pira, jo sumirai hanumat balbira is so dear to people, it says that whoever remembers Hanuman ji, his troubles are cut and all his pain is removed.
There is a famous verse, the eighteenth, jug sahasra jojan par bhanu, lilyo tahi madhur phal janu, where the child Hanuman leaps for the sun thinking it a sweet fruit. People love that the distance in that line comes out close to the real distance to the sun, and take it as a small wonder. Whether one reads it for that or simply for bhakti, the Chalisa gives the mind a great steadiness.
When and how to read it
Any day is fine. Tuesday and Saturday are Hanuman ji's days, and morning after a bath is the common time. Sit before a picture or murti if you have one, light a diya if you like, and read the forty verses without hurry. In most homes the Sankat Mochan Hanuman Ashtak is read right after the Chalisa, and on Tuesdays the Hanuman Sathika too. Shraddha matters more than counting.

Forty. Chalisa comes from chalis, which means forty. Along with the forty chaupais there are two dohas at the start and one at the end, so forty three lines in all.

Any day, but Tuesday and Saturday are Hanuman ji's days, and morning after a bath is the usual time. Many people read it daily, some read it seven or eleven times on Tuesday.
Is the Hanuman Chalisa the same as the Hanuman Ashtak?
No, they are two different paaths by Tulsidas ji. The Chalisa is forty verses of praise, the Sankat Mochan Hanuman Ashtak is eight verses. In most homes the Ashtak is read right after the Chalisa.
